1. How did you hear about IBS Americas?
I discovered IBS Americas in June 2023 during my first year of MBA studies at Wits University. A presentation about global study tour options caught my attention, highlighting the Executive program offered in collaboration with universities like University of La Verne. This would also provide na opportunity for me to travel abroad for the first time to obtain Advanced Strategy qualification from a global Executive program to add to my resume.
2. What motivated you to take a course abroad?
I was motivated to take a course abroad to gain a global perspective, expand my professional network, and develop valuable skills that would enhance my career prospects. The opportunity to study in a diverse and international environment would allow me to learn from industry experts, engage with peers from different backgrounds, and broaden my understanding of business practices. This experience would be instrumental in shaping my future career goals and aspirations.
3. What is your academic background and what were your expectations regarding the international program?
My academic background includes a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of Limpopo (2011) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Medicine Development from Stellenbosch University (during the COVID-19 period). I’m nearing completion of my MBA at Wits University. For the international program, I expected to gain insights into global markets and corporate practices while earning a valuable Executive program certification.
4. How did you choose the course and the university? What were the decisive factors in your choice?
I chose the course and university based on several key factors. Firstly, I was drawn to the opportunity to earn an Executive education certificate from a reputable institution like the University of La Verne. Additionally, the university’s location in California was a major factor, offering a unique blend of academic excellence and exciting surroundings.
5. What were the main challenges you faced being in another country, with a different language and colleagues from various nationalities?
While studying in California, USA I faced some challenges, particularly with the currency exchange from rand to dollar, which limited my choices for
food and activities. However, language was not a significant barrier since English is widely spoken in South Africa. On the other hand, socializing was a positive experience, as I found most people, especially those from Brazil, to be warm and friendly.
6. How do you evaluate the quality of education, infrastructure, and resources offered by the university?
I highly evaluate the quality of education, infrastructure, and resources offered by university of La Verne. The program provided access to cutting-edge tools like the Capsim business simulation software, which allowed us to simulate real-world business decisions. Additionally, the high-quality audio and video content used in class enabled us to deeply analyze business and strategy concepts. Overall, the syllabus was on par with, if not superior to, what I experienced throughout my MBA program at Wits Business School.
7. What were the main learnings and skills you developed throughout the course?
Throughout the course, I developed key skills in strategy formulation and implementation, recognizing that these skills are transferable across industries. I also gained a deeper understanding of how external factors such as culture, politics, and personalities can influence strategy execution. The global executive program has empowered me to drive meaningful impact in my professional endeavors.
8. What places did you have the opportunity to visit during your free time?
During my free time, I had the opportunity to visit some iconic places in Los Angeles. One of the highlights was exploring the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where I took pictures with my favorite stars, danced, and shopped for memorabilia. I also enjoyed trying local food, including fries and salsa from a food truck and tacos at Taco Bell. Additionally, I went grocery shopping at Target and spent some vouchers at Ontario Mills during a company visit.
9. How were your experiences in lectures and company visits?
The lectures were exceptional, packed with a blend of academic and industry knowledge that provided valuable insights. The interactive nature of the classes further enhanced the learning experience. The company visits were thoughtfully curated, spanning diverse sectors such as entertainment, property, philanthropy, maritime, and warehouse/distribution, providing a broad perspective on industry practices.
10. Were you able to expand your networking during the course? Could you share a bit about that experience?
The closest networks became the WBS cohort as we were not familiar with one another prior to the study tour due to different classes back in SA. We have come close due to the group work we did, and we have also bonded during company visits and excursions. We have taken beautiful pictures to capture our memories. And those pics are framed in my home study. I have indeed expanded my network and have connected with them on LinkedIn and Instagram.
11. How will this international experience impact your career?
This international experience will significantly impact my career by enhancing my ability to work inclusively and effectively with diverse groups. The exposure to different cultural approaches, currencies and financial practices will also benefit my current role at SAHPRA, where I facilitate the import and export of medicines. Furthermore, this experience will position me well for future career opportunities in multinational companies, where cross-cultural competence and global awareness are essential.
12. What advice would you give to students and professionals who wish to take a course abroad with IBS Americas?
I would strongly encourage students and professionals to seize the opportunity to take a course abroad with IBS Americas, even if financial constraints seem daunting. The experience is truly worth the investment of time and effort, offering invaluable returns in the form of professional networks, a global perspective, and enhanced business acumen.
